Summit Racing Helps Deboss Garage Rebuild the Chummins Silverado

Boy meets truck. Boy rebuilds truck, drives the wheels off it, then rebuilds it again. It’s a story that never gets old, and one Rich Bosch of Deboss Garage lived. A 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD was his first 'nice' vehicle after years of driving beaters. He drove it everywhere, hauled stuff with it, took his kids camping in it. The Chevy was even part of his wedding procession.

The Silverado also had something else Rich loved—a 5.9L Dodge Cummins diesel conversion. Hooked to the truck’s 4L80E automatic, the 12-valve motor was an unknown quantity and never ran quite right. When the transmission decided it had enough of all that diesel torque, Rich parked the truck in 2012 with intentions of getting it back on the road.

Fully Torqued Season 2 on The History Channel: Father’s Day Surprise 1966 Mustang

Fully Torqued is now in its second season on The History Channel. That means more gearhead adventures for Fully Torqued owner Steve Pazmany and his mentor Uncle ?Bird” Betts, an old-school rodder with deep roots in California drag racing.

Some of those projects have pretty cool backstories; for instance, there’s this 1966 Mustang owned by Steve’s father, Peter. The car has a hot 289 backed by a Toploader four-speed, but the green paint was chipping and cracking, and the five-spoke wheels were sized all wrong for the car. Like a good son, Steve took the Mustang to do a quick oil change and tuneup as a Father’s Day present—or so he told his dad.

Meet Sasquatch, Trent Campbell’s 1979 Jeep Wagoneer

Scratch Trent Campbell and you’ll see his blood runs Jeep red, white, and blue. Poke a little more and you’ll see Di-Noc woodgrain panels. That’s because Trent has been into Jeep FSJ (Full Size Jeep) Wagoneers since he was a kid. His grandfather owned four Wagoneers, and Trent got one of them for his high school ride. He fixed up the ’78 Waggy into a pretty capable off-roader and spent a lot of time in the backcountry of Washington State.

Then, as it does, life happened. Trent got married, his first child arrived, and the Wagoneer got sold and replaced with a station wagon (we know—a Wagoneer literally has wagon in the name, but stay with us here).

Get a Look at Street Trucks Magazine’s Project Rocky 1979 Squarebody

Street Trucks magazine has spent most of 2022 building Project Rocky, a two-wheel drive 1979 Chevy C10 with a four-inch lift and 33 inch Toyo Open Country A/T III tires mounted on 22 x 12 American Force Guardian SS wheels. Naturally, Street Trucks wanted to power the truck with an LS engine, and naturally they found what they wanted at Summit Racing.

The foundation is a Summit Racing™ Chevy LS 5.3L 450HP Long Block Crate Engine machined and assembled by ATK Engines. Based on an iron block with factory internals, it has a Summit Racing Pro LS roller camshaft (222°/232° duration @ .050, .550" lift) that helps push output to 450 horsepower and 420 lbs.-ft. of torque.

Evans Waterless Coolant: Better Engine Protection When Things Heat Up

Since the 1930s, hot rodders and performance car enthusiasts have relied on engine coolants made from a mix of ethylene glycol, water, and corrosion inhibitors. While these water-based coolants do a good job of keeping engine temperatures in check, they fall short when it comes to protection at high operating temperatures and over long periods of time.

It’s the water that is the weak point. Water has excellent heat transfer capabilities, but the typical 50/50 mix of coolant and water has a low boiling point, very close to most engines’ operating temperature. That can cause the coolant to vaporize at normal operating temperatures, leading to overheating and boil-over. Overheating is the most common cause of engine down-time and is responsible for over a third of catastrophic engine failures.

Water in the cooling system also degrades the metals in its components, usually from the inside out. The resulting corrosion, cavitation, and electrolysis issues eventually reduce cooling system efficiency and shorten the life of radiators, water pumps, thermostats, seals, and gaskets.

Hot Rod Meets Overlanding: Rodz by Ludwin's 1936 Ford

Some things just naturally go together. Top Fuelers and nitromethane. Rusty bolts and skinned knuckles. Beer and bench racing. But some things just—don’t. In those cases, it takes a person of vision (or perhaps delusion) to combine two almost opposing ideas into a whole new creation.

Jason Ludwin is such a person. He took two concepts—hot rods and off-roading—and combined them to create what’s most likely the world’s first and only 1936 Ford overlander. The idea doesn’t make sense if you think about it, but when you see it the pieces just fall together and you go yeah, that works.

Road Racing with the Summit Racing™ MAX-efi 500 EFI System

Summit Racing’s MAX-efi 500 Electronic Fuel Injection System has proven itself as an affordable way to convert a carbureted street engine to EFI. Capable of handling up to 500 horsepower, the MAX-efi 500 is a throttle-body system that fits on most any four-barrel intake manifold with a squarebore mounting pattern. The self-tuning ECU continually adjusts fuel delivery to provide the optimum air/fuel ratio under all climate and altitude conditions. But is the MAX-efi 500 a good alternative to a carburetor for racing? On the face of it, the system’s ability to self-adjust fuel delivery, excellent throttle response, and smooth idle would make it ideal for a sportsman-level race car, especially for circle track and endurance road racing where the engine is subject to continuous throttle changes as the car goes through corners, S-turns, and chicanes.

Rusty Off-Roading: Shaking Down Some Old Jeeps in the Wilds of British Columbia

The ubiquitous “shake down” run is a time-honored tradition carried out by gearheads across the world. The trip could be after completing a frame-off restoration, a long-awaited upgrade or even just a DIY oil change. The feeling of taking something you wrenched on yourself back on the street or trail is one we all live for.

The primary purpose of a shakedown run is to ensure the repairs and upgrades are enough to get the vehicle ready the tasks you intend it to do. For some, a good, smoky burnout in view of the neighbors is just what the doctor ordered. We’re off-roaders, so a trip into the woods is what we needed.
