Aftermarket Transmission Cases for Maximum Strength
Stock cases quickly find their limits under the elevated line pressure and high horsepower produced by high-performance drag racing vehicles. Aftermarket Powerglide cases are typically cast from high-strength aluminum (such as 356T6), and feature increased wall thickness in critical areas, which eliminates the flex and cracking common in OE cases. Most aftermarket transmission cases are SFI 4.1 certified, and bellhousings are SFI 30.1 certified with an internal steel safety liner. This eliminates the need for external transmission shields while providing superior rigidity, cooler operating temperatures, and improved component life.
Choosing the Right Gear Set
Performance Powerglides are available with two primary first-gear ratios:
1.76 ratio: This stronger, heavy-duty gear set is preferred for higher horsepower, lightweight drag racing applications. These sets feature a more robust carrier and larger components.
1.82 ratio: This is a lighter option, preferred for lower-power or weight-sensitive builds where reduced rotating mass is prioritized.
Both ratios deliver a true 1:1 second gear, giving the 2-speed Powerglide its characteristic efficiency and consistency down the track. Aftermarket options from Hughes Performance, TCI, FTI, and others expand the available ratio options even further.
TH350/TH400 Input Shaft Options
Stock Powerglide input shafts use a 17-spline design. For greater strength and broader converter compatibility, most race-built units upgrade to a TH350/TH400-style (turbo) 30-spline input shaft.
This popular upgrade allows the use of stronger, more readily available TH350 and TH400 torque converters while providing a larger diameter shaft with increased spline contact area. High-performance versions are available in materials such as 4340, 300M, and Vasco for extreme-horsepower applications.
Forward and Reverse Shift Patterns
Race Powerglides are commonly built with full-manual valve bodies available in both forward and reverse shift patterns. This flexibility lets builders match the transmission to the preferred shifter and driving style while delivering crisp, consistent shifts under race conditions.
