Accelerator: Kirk Marburger's 1966 Chevy Nova

Kirk Marburger had his eye on this race-ready 1966 Chevy Nova for a while, so when it went up for sale in 2007, he quickly sold his 1969 Camaro to make room for it. He had hopes of drag strip domination in the supercharged car, but instead it ended up in a ditch just days later. Fortunately. Kirk’s the type of guy to see this as an opportunity.

On the Turntable: Edward Leasure Jr.'s 1969 Dodge 340 Dart Swinger

When the Dodge Dart rolled off the assembly line in 1960, the economical and reliable daily driver—the smallest of Dodge’s full-size cars when it premiered—hardly made for pin-your-ears-back thrills.

This changed in 1968 with the release of the nimble Dart GTS, which boasted a 340 under the hood. While selling well and garnering positive reviews, the compact 340 GTS stood in the shadow of the Plymouth Road Runner, which came with a more powerful B-series 383 engine and was less expensive to boot.

On the Turntable: Will Roth's 1924 Restomod Dodge Brothers Truck

Founded in 1913 by Horace and John Dodge, the Dodge Brothers Motor Company of Detroit manufactured thousands of trucks before being sold to Chrysler in 1928. Will Roth came across one of the surviving pickups—posted simply as “1924 truck” on eBay—as he was cruising the internet for a new project after restoring a Dodge Lil’ Red Express Truck.

On the Turntable: Chris Glenn's 1976 Chevy Blazer Cheyenne

With an impressive capacity to tote, tow, and trek just about anywhere and carry just about anything, SUVs have made their way into the hearts and garages of everyone from hip-hop celebrities to stay-at-home soccer moms.

With that said, it’s no surprise that Chris Glenn, the owner of Highway 5 Auto Center and Restoration in Whitesburg, Georgia chose a 1976 Chevrolet K5 Blazer Cheyenne as his restoration project of choice.

Glenn originally purchased the Blazer to take off-roading. But before tires met gravel, there were a few kinks to work out. When Glenn pulled the top off of his “new” Blazer, the need for a little elbow grease quickly became apparent.

“I originally bought it to fix up to ride back roads, but when I pulled the fiberglass top off there were rust spots along the sides of the truck bed,” said Glenn. It was apparent that the K5 would need a little work. According to Glenn, “that is what started the restoration process.”

Glenn worked with Lee McRae, Greg Cleveland, Jeff Kimmons, Kevin Holt, John Hunter, Corey Wages, and Lamar Peppers over the course of a year to fully restore the Blazer. “Some of the guys that helped me I’ve known my whole life, and a few others work in the shop,” said Glenn.

Although he keeps pretty busy at his auto center, Glenn hopes to do more rebuilds in the future. “I’ve always been interested in and enjoyed working on vehicles and doing restorations” he says.

We hope he gets another project or two under his belt, too.

On the Turntable: Paul Pickering's 2000 Chevy Camaro SS

Paul Pickering's story of performance car ownership is a little different than most. Typically, the father teaches the son how to spin the wrenches to make improvements on a project car they build together. For Paul, it was his son Kevin’s purchase of a 1999 Camaro SS that got his wheels rolling. In fact, Paul was so impressed with Kevin’s car that he decided to get one of his own. So in the spring of 2004, the search began.

Ultimately, Paul found a lightly used, Bright Rally Red 2000 Camaro SS. The car had been treated to a Lingenfelter Performance 383 stroker conversion good for about 500 horsepower—and a few extra points on your blood pressure reading when you stab the throttle.

On the Turntable: Ron Cannatti's Nova and Robert Pachner's Dart

Ron Cannatti’s 1966 Chevy II, 6.0 Index Class Champion
When Ron Cannatti and partner George Hutton purchased a well-worn 1966 Chevy II in 1995, it certainly didn’t have the look of a champion.

“It was in pieces—definitely a basketcase,” Cannatti recalled. “I mean, the chassis was only 50% done and the body was a mess with no paint.”

The interior was no better. But what the second generation Chevy II did have was a body type that would allow the racing partners to transform it into a fearsome competitor.

“It was the car we wanted. You can put whatever body style you want on it,” Cannatti said.

The build took two years, including an overhaul of the rear end and fabrication work on the chassis and interior to make the once everyday driver race-ready. A 555 CID Chevy big block engine powered the car to the 6.0 Index Series championship.

“It is a very, very unique class,” said Cannatti, a resident of Temperance, Michigan. “It’s a style of racing I absolutely love. No delay boxes. No throttle stops.”

Double Vision: Jon Bunyan's 1969 Camaro and Eric Lowe's 2015 Silverado

It’s no secret—cars and trucks are built on an assembly line, one after another, and save for some factory options and color choices, each one rolls off looking somewhat like the one before. But if you’re like us, you want more from your vehicle…a lot more.
