On the surface, RAM’s fifth generation 3500 HD pickup seems like a marginal upgrade over the previous iteration, but contrary to popular opinion the improvements this pickup brings to the table go beyond the new front clip. RAM made significant improvements to the vehicle’s engine, frame, suspension, interior, and more that helped it beat out its main rival, the Chevy Silverado, in launch-year sales. The vehicle also won several industry awards. The latest generation of RAM’s popular pickup drops the HEMI 5.7L that served as the base engine for its predecessor. At the same time, RAM made the formerly optional 6.4L HEMI V8 engine standard and mated it to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The company offered an upgraded version of its 6.7L Cummins I6 turbodiesel engine with a new compacted graphite iron block design that contributed to a reduction in weight and increased power. Fitted with this engine, the 2019 RAM 3500 became the first mass produced pickup to generate 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque to go along with a towing capacity of more than 35,000 pounds. Beyond the engine, RAM also implemented refinements such as adaptive cruise control, factory LED headlights, new premium materials in certain trim levels, a 12-inch touchscreen, and more.
