The clutch disc (also called friction lining) is the business part of the clutch! The hub of the clutch disc is attached to the input shaft of the transmission. When you let off the clutch pedal, the pressure plate presses the clutch disc against the spinning flywheel of the engine. The springs on the disc absorb the shock as the friction material grabs hold, and power in transferred along to the wheels.

Performance Clutch Discs

Stock clutch discs are designed to promote smooth engagement for polite street manners, while clutch discs for racing are anything but polite! They’re built with more aggressive friction material—such as sintered iron or bronze—for more immediate engagement. They also have a solid, unsprung hub for superior strength.

Some clutches—even on high-powered street vehicles—utilize multiple clutch discs (twin disk clutch or triple disc clutch) for even greater holding power.

How to Find the Right Disc

If you just need a stock replacement clutch disc, you can use our Make/Model search to find it. For an aftermarket upgrade, you’ll need to know the following: input shaft spline count and diameter, necessary disc diameter, type of flywheel, type of vehicle, and intended use.

Fresh Flywheel

Whenever you resurface or replace your clutch disc, you should also resurface or replace your flywheel. Hot spots and other uneven wear can cause slipping and chatter, so it’s best to start over with two flat and clean friction surfaces.
