Howards Cams Track Smart 3 crankshafts are computer-designed and forged from premium 4340 steel. This process includes double stress relief operations that make these cranks dimensionally stable. After machining, the units are hardened with a deep nitride for superior wear resistance, ideal for abusive track environments. Properly placed counterweights improve balance and reduce bearing loads. All rod journals are drilled and counterweights are profiled for piston clearance. Howards Cams Reaper billet steel crankshafts are more robust than most because they have a uniform and non-stress grain structure. These cranks start with E4340 aircraft-quality bar stock material and are precision CNC-machined. They feature bearing journals with large fillet radii (chamfered bearings required) and weight-reducing holes in all rod journals. Reaper crankshafts are available for fitment in a variety of big block applications. Balancing is a must for any high-revving performance engine, and with stroker engines, it is a must to offset the increased reciprocating mass of longer connecting rods. Stroker crankshafts often require the use of Howards Cams heavy Mallory metal plugs on the counterweight. On a very lightweight crankshaft, several pounds of heavy Mallory metal on a counterweight may also offset much of the weight advantage of the lighter crankshaft.
