The purpose of EMPI engine competition oil coolers is to lower and manage engine oil temperature, preventing overheating, extending engine life, and improving performance by ensuring the oil doesn't break down under high stress. The oil coolers achieve this by using a stacked-plate design with aircraft-quality aluminum for strength and maximum cooling efficiency, using ambient air instead of engine coolant to dissipate heat. These oil coolers by EMPI are constructed from aircraft-quality aluminum with a strong, oven-brazed, stacked-plate construction and are purpose-built to withstand the vibrations and harsh conditions of race competition and performance use.

EMPI offers fan shrouds with an integrated "doghouse" style oil cooler for 1300-2332cc, Type 1 based air-cooled VW engines. These dog-house-style fan shrouds have a painted black finish, come without the heater duct connections, and feature nine internal, air directional baffles to ensure proper airflow over the engine. For an air-cooled Volkswagen engine, these types of fan-shrouds are critical to prevent overheating. With doghouse-style shrouds, the oil cooler sits behind the shroud and is offset from the fan in its own compartment (the "doghouse"). The fan pulls in air while the shroud creates a channeling effect to disperse it towards the oil cooler, cylinder heads, pistons and cylinders. If you are eliminating heater boxes and opting to install J-tubes, these doghouse-style fan shrouds eliminate the air ducts for a smoother, cleaner look.
