OEM LS rocker arms are prone to failure, which can result in needle bearings being dispersed through the engine. Smith Brothers suggests replacing the factory needle bearings with solid bronze trunnion bushings that promote even wear and disperse valve spring load evenly. This trunnion upgrade also allows for 360 degree rotation and eliminates the travel stops (which create problems with higher lift camshafts) in the original OE rocker design.

The cam bolts secure the camshaft gear (sprocket) to the camshaft, with a reduced head size for easier installation; while the main cap fasteners are bolts used to attach the main bearing caps to the engine block, which hold the crankshaft firmly in place and are critical for proper crankshaft operation. Performance-minded engine builders know there's an inherent issue with valvetrain deflection when using stock rocker arm mounting in Chevrolet Gen III-IV-cylinder heads. BTR LS shaft rocker kits are designed to significantly reduce deflection, thereby improving both performance and durability. Each kit features technology typically only found in high-end shaft rocker systems. These shaft rocker systems consist of a billet steel stand equipped with four shafts per cylinder head, fasteners and bearings. The shafts are made from genuine 52100 bearing steel. Each pair of rockers has five fasteners mounting them to the rocker stand, compared to the traditional single bolt per rocker configuration.
