Making its official debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the third-generation Toyota Tacoma quickly became the company’s best-selling version in the U.S. and Canada. The new vehicle sold more units in 2015 than any year since the Tacoma’s introduction in 1995, breaking that record in 2016 and again in 2017. The truck’s restyled appearance certainly did not hurt its popularity. Taking style cues from the 2014 Toyota 4Runner SUV and 2014 Toyota Tundra pickup, the truck debuted with a more aggressive grille, new projector beam headlamps, an infused spoiler, and a redesigned tailgate and bed. Toyota initially offered two engine options for the truck—a 2.7L four-cylinder and a 3.5L V6—and six distinct trims. The new V6 engine features Toyota’s D-4S system, which makes it possible to switch from port injection to direct injection in certain driving conditions. Other features and enhancements include additional high strength steel in the frame for increased rigidity and reduced weight; updated suspension, rear differentials, and rear axle for improved drivability; and a complete interior redesign.
