The second-generation Toyota Tacoma, which entered the U.S. market to great fanfare in 2004, was available in 18 different configurations comprising three cab options, four transmissions, two bed lengths, and two engines—a 2.7L four-cylinder and 4.0L V6 version. Replacing the 3.4L V6 from the original Tacoma, the new 4.0L engine put out 236 horsepower and offered enhancements like a 6,500-pound tow rating and 1,650-pound payload capacity. During the truck’s launch year Toyota debuted the popular X-Runner trim, which featured the 4.0L engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Other features included 18-inch alloy wheels, a lower ride height, and an X-Brace suspension package. Like the previous generation, the new Tacoma saw incremental updates throughout its lifecycle that included new standard and safety-related features, as well as minor design changes.
