The face of the top rings in these sets is electroplated with hard chromium to provide a surface that's resistant to abrasive wear. This face coating will not flake off, even when exposed to high vibration and detonation. Being harder and less porous than a moly ring, chrome rings provide increased life in engines that are operated in dusty or dirty environments. Chrome coatings are used mainly on top rings where mechanical and thermal loads are greatest, and on oil rings that have a particularly high unit pressure. Mahle PowerPak piston and ring kits include forged pistons, low-drag rings, steel pins, and wire locks—all in one race-proven package. The pistons are hand-deburred and then coated with dry phosphate to protect against ring micro-welding and pin galling during initial startup. For additional performance, Mahle added its proprietary Grafal anti-friction coating to the piston skirts. These replacement packages are available in a wide variety of size options for fitment with specific engines and pistons.
