In 1999, Toyota unveiled the first-generation Tundra, the full-size counterpart to its popular Tacoma compact pickup truck. The vehicle was an immediate hit, winning Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year award in 2000 and exceeding 100,000 unit sales.
Though the new model shared many commonalities with Toyota’s T100 mid-size truck, it distinguished itself in several key areas. In 2005, Toyota replaced its 3.4L V6 engine with a new 4.0L V6 rated to 236 horsepower and updated the V8 version with variable valve timing technology, boosting its output to 282 horsepower in the process.
Toyota’s first-generation Tundra also is recognized for its significant impact in motorsports. Joining the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2004, the vehicle earned its first win on July 31 of the same year at Michigan International Speedway. Two years later, the Tundra earned Toyota its first manufacturer championship by winning 12 series races.
