Based on the M38A1 military vehicle, the Jeep® CJ-5 (1959-83) had the longest production run of any Jeep® model. In many ways, the CJ-5 set the standard for what a civilian off-road vehicle would look like. Its grille and rounded fenders were transplanted onto the CJ-6, CJ-7, and CJ-8, and the CJ-5 silhouette significantly influenced the Wranglers that would come afterward. The CJ-5 also helped to launch trims like Renegade, Golden Eagle, and Laredo. Through the CJ5’s production run, the Jeep® brand changed hands from Willys, to Kaiser, to AMC, to Chrysler. Though the brand changed hands, the CJ-5 soldiered on, continuing production until 1983.
