The Pontiac Firebird debuted a few months after the Camaro, giving GM a one-two punch in the pony-car fight. At launch, it shared Pontiac’s split-grille design and slit taillights from the GTO, and it was available as a hardtop or convertible. Over its three-year run, the first-gen Firebird made use of several Pontiac engines, including Pontiac’s innovative overhead-cam inline ‘Sprint’ six, and Pontiac 326, 350, and 400 cubic inch V8s. Ram Air options (the Ram Air II, III, and Ram Air IV) offered Poncho drivers improved engine performance. First-gen Firebird styling changes were somewhat subtle, losing its vent windows and gaining side marker lights in 1968, and receiving a grille redesign in 1969.
