Failure of the intermediate stub shaft and direct drum are almost inevitable when transmissions are pushed to the limit. To maximize durability and improve clutch capacity in heavy-duty/performance vehicles, Sonnax offers Smart-Tech direct clutch drum and shaft kits, the first upgrade to eliminate every critical weakness. Most failures in these units occur where the direct drum and stub shaft connect. Even other aftermarket upgrades that rely on a heavy-duty shaft will sheer in this area under extreme conditions. Unlike two-piece assemblies, the all-in-one Smart-Tech easily handles the highest horsepower/torque levels. The unique one-piece clutch drum with integrated stub shaft is precision machined from high-strength steel to guarantee there are no splines to strip from the drum or weaken the shaft. The shaft itself is significantly thicker and 2 times stronger than the original. Due to its larger diameter, the integrated shaft must be used with the kit's custom, heavy-duty sun gear. Insufficient holding power is another area where many transmissions fall short, but installing thinner aftermarket steels and backing plates to increase clutch capacity isn't ideal. Those components increase clutch pack flex and heat build-up, making them the primary cause of repeat burn-up. To improve both performance and long-term reliability, the Smart-Tech's custom drum and piston hold an OE backing plate and seven OE frictions for 17 percent more clutch capacity than the six-friction stack-up. Sonnax Billet Accumulator Pistons

Sonnax Automatic Transmission Kickdown Band Struts

The Chrysler 46RH/RE, 47RH/RE, 48RE and A727 units used in high performance applications often bend or break the kickdown band strut. To help eliminate these issues, Sonnax offers heavy-duty kickdown band struts—made of solid, heat-treated steel that will not bend or break like other stamped struts. These quality replacements feature an extra-thick cross-section for maximum toughness to withstand the increased intermediate "band" applied forces that are common in high performance applications. Installation is easy: just remove the pan and valve body to expose the bottom of the transmission, loosen the adjusting screw to remove all tension from the band, then remove the original strut and insert your new one with the flat surface facing away from the band. Tighten the adjusting screw to manufacturer specs—and you're good to go!

Sonnax Automatic Transmission Reverse Servo Spacers

The Sonnax automatic transmission reverse servo spacers provide a simple, low-cost way to add durability to the GM 4L80-E and 4L85-E transmissions and eliminates the need to retrofit early design reverse servo pistons into late units. Due to a design change in 1996, it had been found that the reverse servo piston commonly breaks because it is stressed more than early servos. Installation of Sonnax reverse servo spacers reduce piston stress by increasing the contact area between the aluminum piston and spacer and incorporating a cushion spring washer. The new contact area is over two times the original and the pressure between the piston and the spacer is reduced by 60 percent. The reverse servo spacer kits easily install during assembly and does not require machining or other modifications. Excessively high line pressure in 'Reverse' is directly related to boost valve wear and cross-leaks into the EPC oil circuit. For maximum durability, inspect and replace the boost valve with one of the Sonnax 4L80-E boost valve kits (sold separately). Sonnax Heavy-Duty Reverse Pistons

Sonnax heavy-duty reverse pistons offer high-strength that will not break at racing pressures. Made from 6061 T-6 billet aluminum, Sonnax reverse pistons are configured to utilize four frictions and five steels, but can also be machined to accept additional frictions and steels for trans-brake applications. They're customizable for any application. To reduce rotating weight in Circle Track applications, two frictions (rotating) and seven steels (non-rotating) can be used. Sonnax Wiring Harness Connector Brackets

It's common for one of the three plastic retention tabs to break on the wiring harness case pass-through connector in GM 4L80-E and 4L85-E units. This allows the connector to be pushed into the case when connecting the external harness. Not only does this require extra labor to fix, it also requires a new wiring harness. Sonnax wiring harness connector bracket 34998-01K retains the internal harness connector even though the retention tabs may be broken. Additional notes: * Bracket firmly holds the connector in place from inside the pan using existing hardware * Connector bracket saves expensive wiring harness replacement * Bracket and bolts are included * 4L80-E and 4L85-E units use two different wiring harness connector styles. The early style has exposed terminals and a red rubber gasket. The late style has a gray plastic enclosure surrounding the terminals. The Sonnax bracket 34998-01K works only with the late style connector.
