1:18 scale 1965 Shelby GT350 Snake On A Plane diecast model honors Dave Steine's '65 Shelby GT350 that was scheduled for delivery via air freight to Romy Hammes Ford in South Bend, Indiana by Trans World Airlines. It was loaded onto a Boeing 707-331F freighter at the Los Angeles International Airport and jetted across the continent. However, after delivery to the dealership, the buyer backed out of the deal, so the TWA pilot who flew the car from Los Angeles to Indiana got word of this turn of events and decided to buy the car from Hi-Performance Motors, Shelby's own dealership in Southern California. So, the car was air freighted back to Los Angeles for delivery to the pilot. "Akron" Arlen Vanke was a working man's drag racer. Competing--and winning--in the Stock, Super Stock and Pro Stock classes, he set records with Pontiacs and, later, Plymouths, earning multiple Stock Eliminator titles with both marques. Through it all, he built the cars in a backyard garage and often drove his open ramp truck to the track and back. In fact, Chrysler hired Vanke to test their performance technology. In 1967, Arlen modified the RO23 Hemi intake manifold for racing. "NHRA rules allowed racers to modify the intake manifold, so I made the stock manifold into a plenum chamber manifold, " he said. Vanke's Hemi, along with the Sox and Martin team, gave Mopars so many victories in the late '60s that they dominated the scene in Super Stocks. In 1968, he built this incredible East Town Hemi Cuda, which helped him win the Nationals in August at Indy running SS/B. He then reset the record again with a 10.61 at 140 miles per hour in the Plymouth Cuda in SS/A at the Winter Nationals in Pomona, California. Now you can own a 1:18 scale replica of the Super Stock race car. The 1968 1/2 Ram Air II is a late production high performance option that was offered by Pontiac in mid-year of 1968 replacing the original L67 Ram Air option. It was developed to meet the demand for maximum performance and to give Pontiac a competitive entry in drag racing competition. It was the first to use re-designed cylinder heads with large round exhaust ports and many other performance enhancements. The Ram Air II Firebird is one of the rarest Pontiac muscle cars. In total, there were 110 Ram Air II Firebirds built in 1968, of which 98 were equipped with a 4-speed manual and 12 with automatic transmission. This 1:18 scale 1964 Daytona Coupe diecast model honors a collectible car with a rich history and timeless design. Here's a little back history ... The 12 Hours of Reims took place in July 1964. Dan Gurney and Bob Bondurant were at the wheel as they had been during the historic winning effort at Le Mans. Gurney set the fastest GT qualifying time during the race. Unfortunately, a broken tail shaft on the transmission put the car out of the race during the 2nd hour. This '64 Daytona coupe would go down infamy by having the unique distinction of carrying the famous Dan Gurney for President stickers on the rear fenders of the car. For most of its 40 years, the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS454 LS6 has been doing exactly what it was built to do: tear up the drag strip. Along the way, it's become arguably the most famous drag racing Chevelle ever, capturing the SS/DA class record in 1972 and setting an elapsed time of 10:75 at 123 mph on the way to winning Top Eliminator 14 of 16 events at Bradenton Dragway in Florida in 1976. Purchased new by A/FX racer Bob Hamilton as a Valentine's Day gift to his wife, the big-block beast was soon spending its Sundays at the local drag strip with Hamilton at the wheel. Sponsored by AMT and dubbed "Red Alert," it began its long and extremely successful career in 1971, setting the SS/DA national record during the 1972 season and owning the track record at New Jersey's Island Dragway for over two years. Hamilton sold "Red Alert" in 1976 to racer Terry Carney who, in 1990, partnered with Bill and Jan Stephenson to reintroduce the car to a new generation of fans and a new career in popular nostalgia drag racing. The car has since run the quarter mile in the low tens at over 130 mph. A true drag racing legend in every sense, the "Red Alert" Chevelle has always been expertly maintained and remains in splendid condition. It is almost entirely as Hamilton raced it, retaining its original sheet metal and interior and most of its original Cranberry Red paint. While Shelby was diving deep into the development of the GT40 for LeMans, he also had his sights on Ford's Mustangs. He wanted to turn Ford's secretary sports car into a track champion. So, Ford sent him three white K-code 1965 Mustangs. Serial number 5R002 would become the very first GT350R prototype and is arguably the most important Mustang in history! 5R002 would have multiple parts tested on it with drivers such as Ken Miles and Bob Bondurant behind the wheel, fenders widened by hand, the famous rear window designed by Peter Brock that let air escape, reverse hood scoop, and so much more! This 1:18 scale 1932 Ford truck diecast model is an homage to the legendary So-Cal Speed Shop. Unlike many tales, the story of the So-Cal Speed Shop is not one made up by some clever marketing types; it's a true story of friendship, hot rods and the need for speed. The story begins on March 22, 1922 in Los Angeles with the birth of Alex Xydias. Although his father was a prominent producer of silent movies, Alex's childhood was fairly normal, and like most young boys, he naturally gravitated toward automobiles. His first hot rod, a '29 Ford roadster with a milled head and a chopped flywheel, which he drove to Fairfax High School, was paid for with part-time earnings. However, his life, like that of so many young men, was about to change when, in 1942, he joined the Army Air Corps, serving as a B-17 engineer. On the day of his discharge—March 3, 1946—using some borrowed money, Alex opened the first So-Cal Speed Shop on Olive Avenue in Burbank. Over the following decades, So-Cal Speed Shop would build some of the most iconic hot rods for many of the most notable collectors on the planet. Their innovation and attention to detail set the bar in the hot rod industry.
