A properly operating idle air control valve is an essential component to helping your vehicle run flawlessly. These valves are often referred to as idle air control or IAC valves (GM), automatic idle speed or AIS valves (DCX), and throttle air bypass solenoid or AIR valves (Ford). These idle air control valves are used on both throttle body and multi-port fuel injected engines to regulate idle speed. The IAC valves open a small bypass circuit that allows air to flow around the throttle. Increasing the volume of air that's allowed to bypass the throttle increases idle speed. The engine's computer controls the IAC valves, if idle speed is out of range, and commands the IAC valves to either increase or decrease the bypass airflow.
