Good, clean wire connector crimps are the cornerstone of any vehicle electrical installation. And we’re guessing that’s why you’re here. Whether you need a spark plug wire crimper to help complete your ignition system or a ratcheting wire crimper to finish off the installation of, say, a set of fog lights or a powered subwoofer, you’ll find top quality automotive wire crimpers here at Summit Racing.
But with well over 100 different electrical wire crimpers available, how do you pick the best automotive wire crimping tool for your project? For starters, you may want to determine what wire gauges you’ll be working with. Most typical automotive electrical projects use anywhere from 18 AWG to 10 AWG wire, yet it’s not uncommon for ignition systems and spark plug wires to use larger gauges. For these applications, you may need something a bit more robust, like a 4-gauge wire crimper.
Understanding wire gauges can be tricky, especially if you’re new to all this and are shopping for your first automotive electric wire crimping tool. If you’re confused, no worries, just remember that, when it comes to wire gauge, the smaller the number, the bigger the wire. (Spark plug wire is often measured by the wire’s outside diameter instead of its gauge too, so you can sort crimping tools by wire diameter as well.)
You may also want a ratcheting wire crimper tool. A ratcheting wire crimper can be beneficial for a few reasons. For starters, a ratcheting wire crimper can deliver a more secure crimp by applying pressure more evenly around the wire and electrical connector. A ratcheting crimper can also offer more repeatable, uniform crimps on your automotive electrical connectors. So, if you’re doing a lot of automotive electrical work and installing a ton of connectors, then perhaps a ratcheting electrical wire crimper tool may be the best choice for your needs.
