The Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic transmission is the heavy-duty version of the TH350. Starting in the 1960s, TH400s were found in heavier, more powerful GM vehicles, like trucks. A torque converter—also called a stall converter when it features higher stall speed—is a fluid coupler that transfers power from your engine’s flexplate to the transmission. Your stock converter is fine for everyday driving, but an aftermarket converter can change the way your TH400 transmission performs. Generally, a higher stall speed can help you launch harder, while a lower stall speed is great for towing. The heat and pressure created by high horsepower can also cause ordinary converters to “balloon” or expand, causing misalignment and damage. Most aftermarket converters are reinforced with anti-ballooning features to survive these conditions.
