The compounds used in street tires aren’t optimized for burnouts, and can actually become slippery when heated up to race temperatures. For drag tires, manufacturers use proprietary materials formulated to get soft and sticky after heating up with a good burnout.

Most drag racing tires today are radials, with bias-ply construction only used for the biggest slicks. In addition to size, there are other factors to consider:

Do you plan to drive the vehicle on the street with the same tires?

Does your race class require DOT-approved tires?
