Upgrading your engine with a timing gear set is a great way to ensure rock-solid, accurate, and reliable engine timing. And in a lot of cases, particularly if you’ve added a hot camshaft or upgraded your valvetrain with stiffer valve springs, a gear drive can be downright mandatory to ensure proper ignition timing under high-stress environments.

That’s because a timing gear kit eliminates a lot of the issues associated with timing chains. Timing gears won’t stretch or break, mitigating variations in cam and ignition timing (and preventing catastrophic valve and piston damage in the process). They’ll also typically last a whole lot longer than chain drives too, ensuring that your timing will stay accurate even over long periods of time, which means you won’t have to go back in and make regular adjustments. And, as mentioned earlier, timing gear drive sets can handle a lot of stress, which is vital for something like a high-stress race or off-road motor.

But there’s another reason why a lot of folks upgrade to timing gears—with a signature whine, perhaps nothing tells the world that you’ve got a potent performance motor under your hood better than a timing gear set. In fact, timing gear whine is right up there with a healthy exhaust cackle and lopey camshaft—music to a gearhead’s ears.
