A throttle body spacer (or riser) installs between the outlet of the throttle body and the rest of the intake system, sort of like a carburetor spacer, but for fuel-injected engines. Typically made of aluminum, nylon, or resin, they add some extra plenum length and volume. Spacers intended for use the throttle body injection (TBI) have smooth internal bores, while spacers for multi-port injection engines have ridges or grooves. Either type of spacer can also add a distinctive note to the sound of your engine.

Large displacement engines and wide-open throttle conditions tend to benefit most consistently from throttle body spacers. If you’ve made other air-hungry modifications to your engine, the expanded plenum volume will also certainly help. Your results may vary, so we recommend talking to other drivers with similar vehicles who have made similar modifications.
