GM’s TH400—or Turbo 400, as it’s often called—is a hugely popular three-speed automatic known for its durability behind high-horsepower engines. Introduced in the 1960s, it was commonly found in muscle cars from Chevy, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Buick, as well as GM trucks and SUVs. Often, stock shifters are worn out, sloppy, or just not great for high-performance use. An old column shifter might be fine for cruising, but it just gets in the way and causes missed shifts when the going gets twisty or you’re trying to bang through the gears—not ideal.
