The shifter cable is a push-pull cable, where travel at one end is duplicated at the other. It connects to your cable-actuated shift lever at one end, and to the shifter bracket on the automatic transmission on the other. It consists of a metal wire that slides inside a sleeve. These shifter cables are flexible, but excess bends can lead to premature wear. Your manufacturer will provide guidelines with regards to proper installation.
