Fortunately, the experts at Summit Racing Equipment have responded, offering rocker arm trunnion upgrade kits for Chevy’s Gen III/IV LS and Gen V LT engines, as well as the 5.9L 24-valve Cummins diesel. They’re easy to install, too; with the rocker arms removed and proper tools on-hand, you can perform the conversion in a couple of hours.

Which is right for your build? Needle bearings may create less friction, for greater power and efficiency. Bronze bushings have fewer parts to fail, and may perform better under heavy loads. Either one is an improvement over the stock parts, especially in a performance application. It really comes down to personal preference.
All trunnion kits include new bearings or bushings, retaining rings (except in Cummins applications), and trunnions. Kits may also include mounting bolts and a removal/installation tool —see item descriptions for more information.

The OE rocker arm bearing design is a proven weak link in high-performance LS engines because the bearings are unable to cope with high lift cams, higher valve spring pressures, and sustained high-RPM use. OEM LS rocker arms are prone to failure, which can result in needle bearings being dispersed through the engine. Smith Brother's suggests replacing the factory needle bearings with solid bronze trunnion bushings that promote even wear and disperse valve spring load evenly. This trunnion upgrade also allows for 360 degree rotation and eliminates the travel stops (which create problems with higher lift camshafts) in the original OE rocker design.
