Upgrade your Ford 8.8-inch rear end with a ring and pinion set engineered for strength, precision, and performance. These gear sets are built from high-grade materials like heat-treated 8620 steel for outstanding durability and long-lasting wear resistance, making them the right choice whether you're building a street machine, racer, off-road rig, or tow vehicle. Premium 8.8-inch ring and pinion sets are often precision-cut using advanced CNC machining and lapping techniques to ensure smooth, quiet operation and optimal tooth contact under load. Choose from a wide range of gear ratios to dial in the perfect balance of acceleration and cruising efficiency. Whether you're swapping gears for better performance or replacing worn-out factory parts, you'll find options from the best brands in the industry. Summit Racing has the Ford 8.8-inch ring and pinion sets you need to improve traction, torque transfer, and reliability.
With popular aftermarket 8.8-inch ring and pinion gear ratios ranging from 3.08:1 to 5.71:1, you’re sure to find the setup that suits your tire size, engine, and performance goals. Lower ratios like 3.08:1 are ideal for highway cruising, while higher ratios deliver low-speed torque and quick acceleration off the line.
When you order your new ring and pinion set, make sure to include a ring and pinion installation kit. Most installation kits include necessary hardware, gaskets, carrier bearings, pinion shims, carrier shims, gear marking compound, and more. Apart from standard mechanic’s hand tools, you’ll need some specialized tools like a dial indicator with a magnetic base for measuring backlash, digital or dial calipers, inch-pound and foot-pound torque wrenches, a seal driver set, a bearing separator, a pinion depth gauge, and a shop press. You’ll also need quality gear oil plus a friction modifier for limited-slip differential applications.
Proper break-in is critical to the long-term performance and reliability of your new ring and pinion set. You should avoid hard acceleration, towing, or sustained high-speed driving during the first 500 miles. Begin with light driving for 15–20 miles, followed by a complete cool-down period. Repeat this cycle until you've accumulated 100 miles to help harden the contact points on the gears. After the initial 500 miles, change the gear oil to flush out any metal particles or debris. If you plan to tow, perform an additional break-in by repeating the light-driving procedure for the next 50 miles while towing a load.
For most street-driven vehicles, change the gear oil every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. If the vehicle sees heavy-duty use, such as towing, off-road driving, or racing, it's wise to shorten that interval to 15,000 to 25,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first. Don't forget to check the pinion seals, axle seals, and differential cover gasket for leaks.
The Ford 8.8-inch axle is a popular choice for performance and off-road enthusiasts thanks to its excellent balance of strength, weight, and widespread parts availability. First introduced in 1983 Ford trucks, the 8.8-inch rear end features a semi-floating axle housing, a 10-bolt differential cover, and a durable 8.8-inch, 10-bolt ring and pinion gear set. Early models came with 28-spline C-clip axles, while later Ford Mustang and truck versions were upgraded to stronger 31-spline axles. The pinion shaft is 1.626 inches in diameter and has 30 splines. Common configurations include both open and limited-slip differentials, making the Ford 8.8-inch axle a versatile and upgradeable option for street, track, and off-road builds.
