Perhaps nothing will ruin a gearhead’s day faster than a dark oily spot on the garage floor from a leaking rear main seal. And since replacing a rear main seal isn’t typically the easiest job, make sure your rear main seal repair goes right the first time by getting quality rear main seals from Summit Racing.
Whether you need a rear main seal for a Jeep 4.0L, the ubiquitous “SBC” small block Chevy 350, GM LS, Ford Windsor, Mopar LA, or whatever’s under your hood, you’ll find engine rear main seals for virtually every popular motor, often with one- and two-piece rear main seal options.
An engine rear main seal is a critical seal that ensures oil from the motor doesn’t seep past the crankshaft, into the transmission or onto your garage floor. Rear main seals often dry out with age, become brittle, and crack—particularly on cars and trucks that don’t get driven often. But if you notice a leak or drip from your engine’s rear main seal, don’t immediately think a rear main seal replacement is necessary. Try driving around for a week or two. There’s a chance your seal has dried out from sitting too long, and running your engine regularly for a little while may recoat it with oil, saturate the material again, and restore the seal.
Additionally, make absolutely sure your leak is from the rear main seal in the first place—it’s not uncommon for weeping valve cover gaskets or distributor seals to be misdiagnosed as rear main seal leaks. (And those are much, much easier to fix.) So, confirm that your leak is coming off the rear main first before starting down the road to a rear main seal repair.
For a lot of older engines though, their original rear main seals will often need to be replaced as they age. And a rear main seal repair can be a cumbersome, time-consuming job, so it makes sense to replace your engine’s rear main seal with a good replacement seal to ensure you don’t have to repeat the job anytime soon.
If your SBC Chevy, 351 Ford, Jeep 4.0L, or GM LS has a rear main seal that’s starting to mark its territory, replace it with a quality replacement rear main seal from Summit Racing. See all your rear main seal options here.

Crown Automotive crankshaft seals are one of the most important parts of your car. These rear main seals are made from durable materials and are designed to handle extreme pressure and temperatures, as well as the caustic chemicals in your engine oil. They're located at either end of the crankshaft and allow it to spin freely and keep engine oil from escaping the engine block, as well as prevent contaminants and other debris from entering and causing damage to the mechanism. Because they are exposed to such abuse, main seals are subject to a lot of wear and tear, and replacement is the only cure when one malfunctions.
