Panhard bars, also commonly known as track bars, have been installed from the factory on every Jeep Wrangler, including the YJ, TJ, JK, and JL. Track bars perform a very simple but critical function: they locate the axles laterally under the Jeep, preventing them from moving side to side. While they’re not 100% necessary on the leaf-sprung YJ, all coil-sprung Wranglers must have track bars for the vehicle to even be driven. No matter what generation of Wrangler you drive, Summit Racing has a track bar that’ll fit your rig and the way you drive it.

On a stock or mildly modified Jeep that mostly stays on the road, the factory panhard bars are sufficient. But as soon as you install a lift kit and want to get serious about hitting the trail, it’s time for an upgrade.
How do panhard and track bars work?
Both front track bars and rear track bars mount to brackets on the frame and axle. They run diagonally from one side of the vehicle to the other. Both ends of the OE track bars feature rubber bushings so the bar can pivot at each end, allowing the axle to travel up and down to soak up bumps, as well as articulate during more demanding off-road maneuvers. The axle end of the bar travels in an arc as it swings up and down. This does cause the axle to move slightly side-to-side, but it’s minimal and not noticeable from the driver’s seat. It should be noted that panhard bars are not limited to Jeeps; many vehicles with solid axles, including performance and race cars, employ them to keep the axle centered while cornering.
Can panhard bars cause—or fix—death wobble?
When your Wrangler’s front suspension begins to violently oscillate after hitting a bump, usually on the road at higher speeds, you’ve experienced the infamous “death wobble.” Many factors can contribute to death wobble: worn ball joints and tie rod ends, improper alignment, badly worn or imbalanced tires, and, yes, your front panhard bar can also be part of the problem, especially if its bushings are worn out. Installing a high-quality, correctly adjusted, and properly torqued track bar from Summit Racing is an item to check off the list when you’re building a Jeep that’s safe and a pleasure to drive.
When and why do you need to change panhard bars?
When you increase the ride height of your Wrangler through the installation of a lift kit, your original equipment track bars are too short. The OE bars may be sufficiently long if you’re just installing a small lift with spacer blocks or a leveling kit, but beyond that you’ll need to make some changes. That’s because, with the stock panhard bars and a lifted suspension, your axles will be permanently shifted to the side. The track bars also become less effective at locating the axle as they hang down farther and are more vertical. Fortunately, many lift kits include longer panhard bars, or in some cases, brackets for the stock bars that relocate the mounting points, bringing the bars back to their factory geometry.
Also, if you’re freshening up the stock suspension on your Wrangler, new panhard bars are a good idea. It’ll make your Jeep tighter, better handling, quieter, and safer.
How are aftermarket track bars different than stock parts?
Aftermarket panhard bars, as mentioned above, may be longer than the factory design. They can also be adjustable, with a threaded tube and ends that allow you to set the length exactly for your lift, perfectly centering the axle under your Wrangler. Also, due to the greater forces involved with large tires and off-road use, they’re much stronger than OE track bars. They can be constructed from chromoly, forged steel, and/or DOM tubing to take any punishment the trail dishes out. And the ends are often an upgrade from stock, too, using heavy-duty bushings, spherical bearings, or Rock Jock Johnny Joints.
