While it’s easy to find a top coat for your single stage paint application at Summit Racing, you may first find yourself asking: What is a top coat paint? Simple, it’s the paint that goes over either your primer or base coat. In a single stage paint system, the top coat usually refers to the layer of paint you apply over the primer. That’s because there is typically no clear coat or finish coat in a single stage system.

And although all paint and primer coat stages are critical to laying down a successful paint job, remember, in a single stage paint system, it’s the job of the top coat to provide both color and durability....

And although all paint and primer coat stages are critical to laying down a successful paint job, remember, in a single stage paint system, it’s the job of the top coat to provide both color and durability. So selecting the right top coat spray paint is vitally important.

But good news: whether it’s a small paint job like car trim or you’re undertaking full bodywork on a large truck or SUV, you’ve got plenty of single stage auto paint options. You can even select from traditional or low-VOC single stage paint to ensure you’re compliant with local laws and regulations.

You have more choices too, including:

  • Acrylic Epoxy. Once cured, epoxy paint is very durable and is the go-to choice for many automotive paint uses, specifically for surfaces that need excellent corrosion resistance and see a lot of abuse, like chassis, wheels, and suspension parts.

  • Acrylic Enamel. Enamel typically only needs to air dry for a period of time before it’s ready to go. Automotive painters often rely on enamels for individual vehicle pieces like brackets and trim. There are also high temperature enamels good for engine and exhaust components.

  • Acrylic Urethane. Long-lasting and relatively easy to apply, many painters rely on urethane paints as the go-to option for auto body paint. It tends to dry quickly and deliver a tough, chip-resistant finish. You’ve got plenty of urethane colors to choose from too.

From high temperature top coat spray paint for engine blocks to plastic, leather or wood coatings—whichever single stage paint job you’re tackling, find the right top coat for the task at Summit Racing.
