A good garage heater will allow you to stay productive in your shop, no matter the weather. There are a few different kinds to choose from, with different benefits for each.

If you have a small- to medium-sized space, consider a portable heater. While these heaters will occasionally need to be refilled with fuel or plugged into a wall outlet, they can be moved around your workspace to put heat right where you need it. For medium- to large-sized spaces, a permanently mounted heater may be preferable. These garage heaters are often directly wired to your facility’s electrical system or connected to a gas line, or they have a significantly larger fuel reservoir, meaning more time between refills.

Choosing your energy source is also important. Electric heaters are typically very quiet, need little maintenance, and don’t require any venting for fumes. They usually include one or more fans to circulate the air in your space, and don’t create any additional humidity. Propane, kerosene, or natural gas heaters are efficient, burning clean fuels to generate heat. Of these, you can choose a portable or permanently mounted design. Infrared heaters (also called radiant heaters) work by using infrared radiation to warm you up directly. Forced air heaters use a fan to move hot air around, warming your space quickly and continuously.

Be sure to check your local laws to ensure your heater is installed safely and complies with building regulations. Some larger and/or gas heaters require a way to vent fumes to the outdoors. If you need help choosing a heater for your garage, shop, cabin, storage building, or other space, give us a call and we’ll help determine which type of heater best fits your needs.
