These systems are available in a few different styles, and they function differently.
Cable-actuated
Cable-actuated manual front axle engagement systems from 4x4 Posi-Lok, Alloy USA, and RT Off-Road replace your rig’s vacuum or electric front axle actuator with a simple, durable push/pull cable. That means your front axle is engaged when you want it to be, every time. As a bonus, they also allow you to shift into low range without engaging the front axle, sending torque to the rear axle only. The result is bind-free steering and excellent maneuverability.
Perm-Lok
Perm-Lok systems from 4x4 Posi-Lok permanently engage the central axle disconnect (CAD) system, eliminating a possible failure point from your four-wheel drive system. Your front axles, differential, and driveshaft are permanently coupled to the front wheels, improving reliability and 4x4 readiness, but power is not sent to the front wheels until the transfer case is engaged. These kits are popular with fleet operators, or on vehicles that are regularly used off road.
2Low Unloc
2Low Unloc kits from BD Diesel are electrical or vacuum/electrical systems that let you unlock your front axle in low range, allowing sharp turns and full maneuverability without driveline binding or front axle hop. This is very useful when maneuvering trailers or heavy loads in tight spots.
