A quality power steering cooler, power steering oil cooler, or power steering fluid cooler is one of the most effective upgrades for protecting pumps, gearboxes, racks, and hydroboost units—especially when running oversize tires, high-demand hydraulic systems, or competing in road racing and track events.

A quality power steering cooler, power steering oil cooler, or power steering fluid cooler is one of the most effective upgrades for protecting pumps, gearboxes, racks, and hydroboost units—especially when running oversize tires, high-demand hydraulic systems, or competing in road racing and track events.

Why a Power Steering Cooler Is Needed

Power steering systems generate significant heat through friction in the pump, steering gear/rack, and valves. Under normal conditions the fluid stays within a safe range. Add larger tires, low-speed off-road crawling, heavy front-end weight, sticky tires, a hydroboost brake system, or the demands of road racing, and heat skyrockets.

In road racing, autocross, drifting, and track-day use, repeated high-speed steering inputs, sustained cornering loads, elevated pump rpm, and heat soak from prolonged sessions can push fluid temperatures well above 250–300°F. At these levels the fluid thins, loses lubricity, aerates or foams, and begins to break down. Drivers often notice fading assist, a heavy or inconsistent steering feel, pump whine, or even boiling fluid overflowing from the reservoir. Without adequate cooling, pumps and steering components can fail mid-session.

Excess heat thins the fluid, reduces lubrication, promotes aeration/foaming, breaks down seals, and accelerates wear. Burnt-smelling or dark fluid is a clear warning sign. Overheating can lead to inconsistent assist, hard steering, or complete component failure—repairs that often cost far more than a cooler.

Vehicles with oversized tires like lifted off-roaders and trucks place much higher loads on the steering system, especially at low speeds or when tires are aired down. Hydroboost systems share the power steering pump and fluid circuit, adding another heat source. Road-racing and high-performance driving add to these stresses through continuous steering and/or braking cycles with limited cool-down time. In all these applications a dedicated power steering cooler is strong insurance that keeps temperatures in check, preserves fluid life, and maintains consistent steering feel.

Application-Specific vs. Universal Power Steering Coolers

Application-specific coolers are engineered to match OE form, fit, flow rates, and mounting points. They typically install with minimal modification, maintain designated pressure and flow characteristics, and deliver cooling performance proven for that vehicle. They’re ideal when replacing a factory cooler or when precise integration is preferred.

Universal power steering cooler kits offer flexibility for custom builds, lifted trucks, off-roaders, rock crawlers, road-race cars, and vehicles that never had a factory cooler. They come with hoses, clamps, and mounting hardware so you can place the cooler where airflow is best. Choose a kit sized for your fluid volume and heat load; oversized or multi-pass designs suited for heavy use with big tires, hydroboost, or track duty.

Both styles work well when properly selected and installed. Application-specific units excel in direct-replacement scenarios, while universal kits shine in modified, high-performance, and road-racing setups.

Construction Differences: Tube and Fin, Heat Sink, and Plate

Cooler design affects efficiency, durability, size, and mounting options:

  • Tube-and-fin: The most common and economical style. Fluid flows through one or more tubes (often with internal turbulators for better heat transfer) surrounded by aluminum fins. Available in 2-pass or multi-pass configurations. Excellent for everyday driving, light towing, moderate upgrades, and many track-day cars. Lightweight, easy to mount in front of the radiator or condenser, and straightforward to clean. Good balance of cost and performance; multi-pass versions handle higher heat loads better.

  • Heat sink: Often a compact extruded aluminum body with internal and external fins (popularized by brands like PSC). Relies less on high-volume airflow and more on surface area and conduction. Ideal for off-road vehicles, rock crawlers, tight engine bays, or race cars where traditional finned coolers are hard to place. Can be mounted on frame rails, under the vehicle, or in other protected locations while still effectively shedding heat.

  • Plate (plate-and-fin or stacked-plate): Highest efficiency designs. Fluid travels through flat plates or stacked channels with large surface area and internal turbulation. Superior heat rejection in a compact package, better pressure handling, and excellent for heavy-duty, road-racing, or extreme-duty applications. More robust than basic tube-and-fin but typically costs more and can be harder to flush if contaminated. Preferred by many serious track and road-race builds for maximum cooling capacity.

Select your preferred style of power steering cooler based on the heat load, available space, and airflow. Tube-and-fin covers most street, mild off-road, and entry-level track needs; heat-sink and plate styles suit severe service with oversize tires, hydroboost, or sustained road-racing sessions.

Installation and Location Tips

Install the cooler in the return (low-pressure) line between the steering gear/rack (or hydroboost unit) and the reservoir/pump. This location is safer, easier to plumb, and still effective at dropping fluid temperature before the fluid re-enters the pump.

Best mounting practices:

  • Place the cooler in the path of cool ambient air—ideally in front of the A/C condenser or radiator for maximum efficiency. This is especially important for road-race cars that spend long periods at speed with high under-hood temperatures.

  • Alternative positions (between condenser and radiator, or behind the radiator) still help but are less effective.

  • Keep the cooler at least 1 inch from fans and well clear of exhaust manifolds or other heat sources.

  • Orient tube-style coolers so the tubes run horizontally with fluid entering low and exiting high to avoid air traps.

  • Mount the cooler physically lower than the reservoir to prevent drain-back and air ingestion when the engine is off.

  • Use proper hose (compatible with power steering fluid), quality clamps, and protective sleeves. Avoid tight bends, sharp edges, and rubbing points.

  • After installation, fill with the correct fluid (high-quality synthetic is strongly recommended for track use), bleed the system thoroughly (engine running, turning the wheels full lock left and right with them off the ground), and check for leaks.

Many universal power steering cooler kits include everything needed for a clean install. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and torque specs. On road-race cars, prioritize secure mounting that withstands vibration and high-speed airflow.

Trusted Brands for Power Steering Coolers

Look for proven names that focus on durability and real-world performance:

  • PSC: Highly regarded for hydraulic steering systems, hydro-assist, and robust heat-sink style coolers designed for off-road, heavy loads, and other demanding applications.

  • Hayden: Long-time leader in aftermarket fluid coolers; offers reliable tube-and-fin kits popular for trucks, off-roaders, passenger vehicles, and track cars.

  • Mishimoto: Performance-oriented aluminum coolers with quality construction and universal mounting options well suited to modified and racing vehicles.

  • Four Seasons: Solid OEM-style and replacement coolers known for delivering an accurate fit and dependable cooling.

  • Other reliable options include Dorman, Derale, BD Diesel, and various specialty manufacturers that produce application-specific or heavy-duty units favored by road racers and autocross competitors.

Summit Racing has a steering cooler matched to your vehicle’s demands, whether you’re daily driving, towing, running oversized tires, operating a hydroboost system, or spending weekends on the road course. A properly selected and installed power steering cooler protects expensive components, maintains consistent assist, and extends the life of your entire steering system under the most demanding conditions.

Protect your investment. Keep the fluid cool and the steering precise on the street, the trail, or the track.
