Performance Mustang Exhaust Benefits

Swapping out stock exhaust components for an aftermarket Ford Mustang exhaust system is a great way to add more horsepower, increase torque, reduce overall vehicle weight, and give your ride that iconic, confident Ford Mustang exhaust sound. The three most common types of exhaust kits are axle-back exhaust, cat-back exhaust, and header-back exhaust kits. A variety of options are available for each Mustang generation, model year, and trim. These include aftermarket V6 Mustang and V8 Mustang GT exhaust systems, as well as Mustang EcoBoost exhaust systems. Aftermarket dual exhaust systems also are available, either as upgrades for GT models or conversions for Mustang V6 models.

Axle-Back vs. Cat-Back vs. Header-Back Exhaust

A Mustang axle-back exhaust is the most affordable custom exhaust option, making it an excellent choice for budget-minded drivers who want a mild performance upgrade and improved exhaust sound. Axle-back systems include all parts of the exhaust from the rear axle to exhaust tip—typically just the muffler on a Ford Mustang. The biggest advantage is that they are affordable and easy for DIYers of all skill levels to install.

Mustang cat-back exhaust systems are more expensive than an axle-back system but provide even more horsepower and further weight reduction. Modified from the catalytic converter to the exhaust tip, a cat-back exhaust system typically features a less restrictive catalytic converter, free-flowing H or X pipes, free-flowing mufflers, and new exhaust tips. These components often use lighter materials that can reduce the overall weight of a vehicle by 20-30 pounds. The wider, free-flowing pipes and muffler can also add 20-30 more horsepower while giving your pony a more aggressive rumble.

For the most dedicated Mustang owner, header-back exhaust kits replace all exhaust system components. Exhaust headers replace the stock exhaust manifolds, and new piping extends from the rear of the heads to the front of the cat. Full exhaust kits reduce a considerable amount of weight and add even more horsepower.

Dual vs. Single Exhaust

Mustang exhaust systems are available in single or dual exhaust setups, depending on the specific vehicle you drive. A dual exhaust conversion kit is the ultimate modification for Mustangs with V6 engines. Standard on Ford Mustang GT models, a dual exhaust system conversion can increase horsepower in a Mustang V6 engine and produce an aggressive, throaty rumble.
