Modern universal stock exhaust hangers usually consist of a rubber insulator or bushing that connects a rod or stem on the exhaust component to one on the undercarriage of the vehicle. Older vehicles used elements like rubber straps and metal brackets. Whatever they look like, the hangers hold the pipes, resonators, catalytic converters, and mufflers in place, absorbs bumps and vibration, and help keep the system quiet. Rubber can degrade over time, so if you’re noticing some bumps and rattles, check your exhaust hangers.
