In a dual exhaust system, a crossover pipe helps smooth out and balance the pulses of exhaust gases, helping the engine perform more efficiently and reducing drone inside the cabin. An H-pipe crossover is simply a horizontal tube that connects to both sides of the exhaust, while an X-pipe merges both sides and then separates again. An X-pipe has the added benefit of improved scavenging, usually netting a few horsepower.
