They lock the axles together, providing 100% of available torque to both wheels, regardless of whether one is off the ground or on a low traction surface. Many Jeep owners install a Dana 30 locker or a Dana 44 locker front and rear locking differential to enhance off-roading capabilities. When the differential is locked, the wheel off the ground doesn't receive any torque due to lack of traction, while the wheel on the ground gets all the torque, enabling the vehicle to move effectively.
