Whether you’re finishing up a freshly machined block, or deglazing the cylinders of an old block to give it new life, only a cylinder hone tool can deliver the even, machined finish you’re looking for. Cylinder Hone Styles
There are two main types of cylinder honing tools. Stone-style tools use strips of fine-grit polishing stones attached to spring-loaded arms. Brush-style hones—sometimes called ball hones—have dozens of abrasive balls attached to stiff metal bristles.
Using The Cylinder Hone
Whichever style you choose, operation is pretty similar. The axle of the hone is fit into the chuck of a power drill, and the tool and cylinder are lubricated with oil. Then, the hone is inserted into the cylinder and spun by the drill. The hone is worked up and down several times, and then the process can be repeated with finer grits.
In addition to eliminating burrs and imperfections leftover from the machining process, the eventual goal of the honing process is to develop a fine cross-hatching pattern on the wall of the cylinder that will help retain oil.
Cylinder honing tools can be used to finish engine cylinders, clutch and brake master cylinders, and more. Summit carries a wide variety, and you can shop by cylinder size below.
