Gen 3 LS crate engines and Gen 4 LS crate engines are a great alternative to rebuilding your own engine or pulling an LS long block from the local scrapyard.

LS engines can be swapped anywhere that a Gen 1 or Gen 2 small block Chevy (SBC) engine will fit. The engine blocks, available in both aluminum and cast iron, can easily handle over 800 horsepower.

Due to LS engines’ high degree of parts interchangeability and excellent aftermarket support, every engine in the LS engine family—even the humble cast iron truck motors—have the potential to make more power than a supercharged LS9.

5.3L and 5.7L LS Crate Engines

Gen 3 LS crate engines and Gen 4 LS crate engines are a great alternative to rebuilding your own engine or pulling an LS long block from the local scrapyard.

LS engines can be swapped anywhere that a Gen 1 or Gen 2 small block Chevy (SBC) engine will fit. The engine blocks, available in both aluminum and cast iron, can easily handle over 800 horsepower.

5.3L and 5.7L LS Crate Engines

The 5.7L Gen 3 LS1 started it all in 1997. With an aluminum block, 2.000 in. intake valves, and 67cc combustion chambers, the stock LS1 could make 350 hp. The upgraded LS6 managed another 50 hp thanks mostly to a hotter cam and the 243 heads with smaller combustion chambers and more port volume.
The 5.3L Gen 3 iron block LM7 is hard to beat if you’re on a budget. It’s no slouch at close to 300 hp stock. Plus, it can be stroked to 383 c.i.d. and upgraded with many LS1/LS6 parts. You will find the LM7 under the hood of many boosted LS swaps.

6.0L LS Crate Engines

The 6.0L Gen 4 aluminum block LS2 makes about 400 hp stock and uses the same cathedral port heads as the LS6.
The LQ4 is a 6.0L Gen III engine with a cast iron block. It makes over 300 hp stock. Like the LM7, it’s great for budget builds and boost. LQ4s can be stroked to 408 c.i.d and upgraded with many LS3 parts.

6.2L LS Crate Engines

The 6.2L Gen 4 aluminum block LS3 got new rectangle port heads, 2.165 in. intake valves and 70cc combustion chambers. A stock LS3 churns out over 425 hp stock and is commonly stroked to 415 or 416 c.i.d.

7.0L+ LS Crate Engines

With a 4.000 in. stroke GM managed to get 427 c.i.d. out of the aluminum block LS7. They didn’t stop there. A forged crank, titanium rods, 2.200 in. titanium intake valves, square port CNC-ported heads, and dry sump oiling is good for over 500 hp stock.
Chevrolet Performance saw a need for big-displacement cast iron blocks so they brought us the LSX Bowtie Block. It’s similar to the LS7 block with some extra material in high stress areas. Available in 376 and 454 c.i.d. and capable of even more, crate engines with these blocks can make up to 2,000 hp on nitrous or boost.

Thanks to increased distance between the cam and crankshaft centerline, LS engines are practically made for stroker cranks. Improvements from the original SBC to LS didn’t stop with the block. LS cylinder heads are optimized for flow with cathedral shaped, symmetrical intake ports and low valve angles.

While there were many small changes across different models, some of the biggest came with the transition from the Gen 3 to the Gen 4. The Gen 4’s reluctor wheel increased from 24 to 58 teeth. There are provisions for Active Fuel Management (AFM) and Variable Valve Timing (VVT).
