The cam bolts that secure the timing gear to the end of the camshaft can’t just be any old hardware store screws, especially on a racing engine. They have to withstand tremendous forces at extremely high speeds, not just for safety, but to keep your timing rock solid.
Many cam bolts are torque-to-yield (TTY) bolts. They stretch during installation, which helps keep them secure, but it also means the bolts shouldn’t be reused.
