Stage 8's Grade 8 locking header fasteners use a patented system that consists of a grooved hex-head bolt or nut, a retainer, and a snap clip. The retainer fits over the bolt head and locks the bolt against the header tube, and the snap clip holds the retainer in place. Once Stage 8 header fasteners are tightened down, they won't back out, eliminating leakage and blown header gaskets from loose bolts.

Summit Racing™ split lock bolt kits put a new twist on the theory of mechanical locking fasteners. These innovative bolts use a locking set pin built into the bolt itself—and when tightened, the set pin expands the bolt threads against the thread wall. This, in turn, provides a locking system without having to use any additional wires, locking compounds, or lock washers. To remove the split lock bolts, simply loosen the set pin and back out the fastener. They are available in a variety of thread sizes, for engine applications from the 1950s and up.

You can try to install your headers with ordinary hardware, but it's not advisable. If it isn't impossible, it will be very difficult. Bolts can work just fine for header installations, but Mr. Gasket's header studs offer some distinct advantages. Most importantly, they help prevent stripped threads in aluminum heads. Beyond that, they also make lining up the headers for installation a lot easier. Some studs have special narrow tips to make that alignment task even easier, and some are made from Grade 8 steel for extra strength.
