Whether you’re slamming your shifter down the drag strip, or slipping it into overdrive for a long cruise, the cable that connects your shift lever to your automatic transmission is crucial. If shifting becomes difficult, or you notice more backlash or “play” in the shifter action, it might be time to replace your automatic transmission shifter cable. Fortunately, you’re in the right place!

The shifter cable is a push-pull cable, where travel at one end is duplicated at the other. It connects to your cable-actuated shift lever at one end, and to the shifter bracket on the automatic transmission on the other. It consists of a metal wire that slides inside a sleeve. These shifter cables are flexible, but excess bends can lead to premature wear. Your manufacturer will provide guidelines with regards to proper installation.
