Insufficient carrier bearing pre-load can result in premature bearing failure and ring and pinion failure in all differentials, and possible oil/air leakage issues in an air locker differential. ARB differential carrier shim installation drivers are professional service tools for installing/servicing common shim pre-loaded differentials. Most common Salisbury-style axle assemblies require the pre-load shims to be tapped into place to achieve the required pre-load during set-up. Tapping shims into a tight space from a single point on the outside edge of the shim can cause damage to the shim, rendering it useless, resulting in extra cost and labor. ARB's shim drivers are comprised of six different sized steel profiles designed to evenly distribute the installation force around the outside edge of a differential shim as it is tapped into place, allowing thinner shims to be inserted into tighter places than would otherwise be possible.

A 4x4 and traction go hand-in-hand; however, standard (open) differentials allow each wheel to turn independently to eliminate binding in turns. Off-road, this becomes a problem as engine power takes the path of least resistance—to the wheel with little or no traction. Limited slip differentials offer some improvement, but too often the slipping is not "limited" enough to maintain forward progress. Automatic locking differentials also have disadvantages; noisy when disengaging, they can also upset on-highway driving characteristics. Created to provide traction on demand, without sacrificing highway driving performance, ARB Air Locker differentials employ a 12 V ARB air compressor (sold separately) to pneumatically operate a solid and durable locking mechanism inside the differential. When activated, the Air Locker prevents the differential gears from rotating and the axle shafts from turning independently of each other. With both wheels tied directly to the rotation of the ring gear, the vehicle maintains maximum possible traction at all times. When unlocked, it operates just like a conventional open differential. The space set allows you to move the wheel in or out without searching for the right size spacer. Once you have your baseline spacing correct on your axle, simply move the existing spacers from the inside of the wheel to the center of the split cone or vice versa.
