Input housing failure at the shaft and forward piston areas is common in high-torque 4L60, 4L60-E, 4L65-E, and 4L70-E transmissions. Also, the input drum assembly is known to crack and strip out splines where the input shaft is pressed into it (where the overrun piston rides). Sonnax input housing sleeve kits—forward sleeve kits and overrun sleeve kits—when used in combination with each other, greatly increase the maximum strength of the housing for additional torque capacity and can prevent these failures. In certain applications there is no way to pilot a reamer to repair a worn valve body, forcing rebuilders to purchase new ones. This patented self-aligning fixture with specially designed tool kits allows these valve bodies to be repaired. The fixture provides an external rigid pilot bore for the reamer and guide pin. The self-aligning feature allows the fixture to be used on multiple valve bodies and valve bores. The fixture base is large enough to provide ample support for the valve body. Various transmissions locate some valve bores in the pump body rather than the valve body. These larger pump bodies do not readily fit onto the standard VB-FIX base plate. Sonnax offers an oversized pump base plate, VB-06, that allows large passenger vehicle pump bodies to be easily mounted and clamped to the VB-FIX for repair. Deterioration at the balance spool end allows critical fluid loss, resulting in high line pressure, harsh shifts, and overheating due to reduced cooler/converter flow. Wear at the outboard spool robs converter feed pressure and lowers line pressure, resulting in soft shifts and burnt clutches. Vehicles with a GM 8L45 or 8L90 automatic transmission may exhibit high or low line pressure that results in harsh/soft shifts, burnt clutches, loss of cooler and lube flow, and overheating of the transmission and converter. These problems may be caused by wear of the pressure regulator bore casting at the VFS signal port area and/or at the shuttle valve sleeve. Wear at the inboard port of the pressure regulator bore allows VFS (throttle) signal pressure to leak, preventing proper action of the pressure regulator valve and potentially allowing it to remain in the low line pressure position. Wear of the shuttle sleeve due to continuous oscillation of the shuttle valve creates a path for balance line pressure at the pressure regulator valve to exhaust, resulting in excessive low line pressure. Vehicles with GM 200-4R and 4L60 transmissions often have problems with poor reverse boost or upshifts in manual low. These are generally caused by a worn reverse boost valve sleeve or wear at the pump body. Sonnax offers a larger ratio (.283 in.) reverse boost valve kit to restore the hydraulic integrity of the assembly. Due to the differences in the thermal expansion rate of steel and aluminum when the transmission approaches operating temperature, the sleeve has been allowed excessive clearance and scrubs the bore. The detent ball in the valve body in listed Chrysler automatic transmissions (see Applications tab) wears into the aluminum bore due to continuous movement and vibration of the linkage. This creates excessive looseness in the manual valve lever and allows the manual valve to move out of alignment. No start or being stuck in Park can occur from the manual valve being out of position due to extra clearance. This condition often requires that the valve body be replaced. Sonnax valve body detent ball and sleeve kits allow the valve body to be salvaged. The bore must be oversized using the self-guiding bench reamer included in Sonnax tool kit 22771-TL12. A .096 in. diameter drill bit is also included to allow the retaining pin hole to be redrilled for use with the OE pin. Sonnax detent spring 22771-36 is also available.
