The OE pressure regulator valve design prevents adequate cooler flow at low rpm and high-pressure conditions, which can create overheating. Additionally, in 1999 and later vehicles, the factory EPC pressure was set high at idle, resulting in engine surge conditions in GM 4L80-E and 4L85-E units. Sonnax lube-regulated pressure regulator valves provide a significant increase in cooler flow under low rpm and high-pressure conditions that benefits all vehicles—and eliminates the need for reprogramming 1999 and later vehicles with high EPC pressure at idle.

GM 6L45, 6L50, 6L80 and 6L90 automatic transmission units may exhibit multiple line pressure and cooler/converter/lube flow problems due to excess wear in the pressure regulator bore. Deterioration at the balance spool end allows critical fluid loss, resulting in high line pressure, harsh shifts, and overheating due to reduced cooler/converter flow. Wear at the outboard spool robs converter feed pressure and lowers line pressure, resulting in soft shifts and burnt clutches. Installing a Sonnax pressure regulator valve kit restores the hydraulic integrity of these circuits for proper line pressure control in all ranges. A new pressure regulator valve outer spring is also included to replace weakened original springs and provide a modest 5 psi increase across the pressure curve. To help eliminate these issues, Sonnax offers heavy-duty kickdown band struts—made of solid, heat-treated steel that will not bend or break like other stamped struts. These quality replacements feature an extra-thick cross-section for maximum toughness to withstand the increased intermediate "band" applied forces that are common in high performance applications. Installation is easy: just remove the pan and valve body to expose the bottom of the transmission, loosen the adjusting screw to remove all tension from the band, then remove the original strut and insert your new one with the flat surface facing away from the band. Tighten the adjusting screw to manufacturer specs—and you're good to go!
