If you’ve been an enthusiastic shifter your entire life, there’s a good chance your manual transmission shifter stick has worn a bit, which could result in a sloppy, loose shifter feel. So, there are plenty of direct replacement shift handles available for many popular manual transmission styles too, and you can find them by simply searching by model number—check out the handy search filters to help refine your shifter search results.
But if you’re not looking for a direct replacement, how do you find the right shift stick for your ride? The answer probably starts with a ruler or tape measure. In fact, a lot of gearheads will even go so far as to mock-up a shift lever with cardboard or wooden dowels to get a ballpark idea of where they want their shift knob to be located. Once you have those rough measurements, you can start refining your search to shift levers that share similar specs. And Summit Racing will include as many of those shifter measurements as possible on the shifter description page, including shifter stick length, layback, and (if applicable) shifter offset.
One final thought on selecting a manual transmission shift lever: If you have a specific shift knob in mind to install on your new shifter stick, make sure to check its thread pitch. While many shifters have 3/8-16 inch thread for the shift knob, it’s not uncommon to see 3/8-24 inch (or other) thread too. Again, you’ll find thread specs in each shifter’s overview page.
