Whether you’re topping-off your tires with air, blowing surfaces clean, or powering air tools, a good general use air compressor is the cornerstone of any home garage or workshop. And given the range of jobs an air compressor can handle, there’s a wide assortment of air compressors to choose from.
So, which air compressor is right for you?
Start by understanding your needs and the jobs your air compressor will tackle. If you’re just doing occasional tire inflations, then a small pancake air compressor may suffice. If your short on space or want some flexibility, then a small portable air compressor can fit the bill too....
If your short on space or want some flexibility, then a small portable air compressor can fit the bill too. (And if you’re really remote, there are portable air compressors that can be powered off a 12-volt vehicle battery as well!)
But if you’re going to put your air compressor through a lot of work cycles, like powering air tools or spray guns, then a large (like an 80 gallon or more) industrial air compressor is essential. In very basic terms, the larger an air compressor’s tank is, the longer you can operate it without the air compressor pump cycling back on. That may not be a big deal if you’re only using your air compressor for small jobs, like topping-off a set of tires or feeding an airbrush, but for more prolonged use, you’ll definitely want an air compressor with a large-sized tank.
Speaking of air compressor size, a vertical air compressor is a great way to fit a larger tank in a relatively small footprint. In a lot of cases, a large vertical 80 gallon air compressor can fit in the corner of a shop without too much difficulty.
Another important spec is an air compressor’s PSI. Even for a basic job like inflating tires to something like 30 PSI, you’ll want an air compressor that can supply more than that—something like 60 PSI of pressure at least. Many air compressors offer well over that range too, and you’ll find plenty of 100 and 120 PSI air compressors available at Summit Racing.
Ready to start shopping for a general use air compressor? Assess your air compressor needs, including the types of work you’ll use it for and your shop space requirements, and filter your search results accordingly. Then find the right air compressor for your garage at Summit Racing.

BendPak Elite air compressors are high-quality air compressors that deliver proven longevity in the most demanding conditions. Because they run at a slower rpm than most comparable units, they are quieter, run cooler, and cost less to operate. The 100 percent cast iron pumps provide the quality and performance needed for heavy-use applications, like automotive and body repair to manufacturing and industrial service. The 2-stage, twin piston pumps feature splash lubrication for total reliability and a finned cylinder configuration that provides 360 degree cooling. The compressors' heavy-duty, disc-type valves are dependable and accessible without having to remove the cylinder head or perform other complicated valve maintenance procedures. A built-in intercooler and an air-cooled aftercooler chills the air resulting in reduced heat and condensation moisture. BendPak Elite Air Compressors feature: * Extra-quiet low RPM pumps * Cast-iron pump and heads * Splash lubrication * Dual belt drive for less load on bearings * Fully enclosed belt guard * ASME rated tank * Large surface area, cooling fins, and forced-air aftercooler * Oversized ductile iron crankshaft * Tapered roller main bearings * Precision balanced flywheel * Magnetic starter * Cast iron oil reservoir with large oil drain and sight gauge glass
