DOT Ratings

Brake fluid is sold in three main formulations, designated by DOT (Department of Transportation) and a number.

DOT 3 and DOT 4 are glycol-based brake fluids. They’re pretty corrosive to start, and they can absorb water from the air, which makes them even more acidic (so keep your master cylinders and extra bottles closed tight). Fresh DOT 3 fluid has a boiling point of 401°F, so it’s fine for daily drivers. DOT 4 boils at 446°F and resists acidification better, so it’s better for performance vehicles.

DOT 5 brake fluid is silicone based, and boils at 500°F. It doesn’t absorb moisture, but it can develop foam, so it’s not advised for use with anti-lock braking systems.
