DOT 3 and DOT 4 are glycol-based brake fluids. They’re pretty corrosive to start, and they can absorb water from the air, which makes them even more acidic (so keep your master cylinders and extra bottles closed tight). They’re pretty corrosive to start, and they can absorb water from the air, which makes them even more acidic (so keep your master cylinders and extra bottles closed tight). Fresh DOT 3 fluid has a boiling point of 401°F, so it’s fine for daily drivers. DOT 4 boils at 446°F and resists acidification better, so it’s better for performance vehicles.

DOT 5 brake fluid is silicone based, and boils at 500°F. It doesn’t absorb moisture, but it can develop foam, so it’s not advised for use with anti-lock braking systems.

Gunk DOT 3 brake fluid conforms to Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 116 and SAE No. J1703. It is approved for all ABS systems and will work in all disc and drum brake systems where DOT 3 fluid is specified. Gunk DOT 3 brake fluid has a minimum wet boiling point of 284 degrees F and a minimum dry boiling point of 450 degrees F to prevent vapor lock.
