General Motors’ 700R4—or TH700R4, for Turbo Hydra-Matic—is a 4-speed automatic that is essentially a TH350 with a 30% overdrive gear. It was introduced in the early 1980s to improve the fuel economy of GM’s cars and trucks, and is still a popular transmission today, well-suited to a wide range of applications.
