MAP stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure. The MAP sensor is attached to your intake manifold or throttle body, where it monitors the amount of air flowing into your fuel-injected engine. This allows the computer to fine-tune fuel spray and spark timing to optimize performance, fuel economy and emissions. Some vehicles use a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor instead, which performs a similar task.

A faulty MAP sensor can cause your vehicle to run rich or lean. MAP sensors also operate over a limited pressure range (indicated in psi or bar), so if you’ve made performance modifications involving forced induction, you may need...
